Keywords:
Environmental History, Environmental disasters, Santa Catarina, FlorianópolisAbstract
The growing interest in developing research on catastrophic events can be partly explained by the large number of people affected by disasters of all kinds each year. In this article, the objective is to demonstrate the flood dimension in the Metropolitan Region of Florianópolis during the years of 1980 to 1999, from the analysis of aspects such as the extent, frequency and period of occurrence of these disasters. To achieve this purpose, we use as sources official documents produced by municipal governments and Civil Defense, in addition to news published in the newspaper O Estado. These documents were analyzed from the theoreticalmethodological perspective of Environmental History, which allowed us to perceive the relationship between humans and the environment through socio-environmental disasters.
