Abstract

This article explores microaggressions in university classrooms and their effects on the academic paths of women and sexual minorities. Based on semi-structured interviews and focus groups with undergraduate students, the study identified experiences of academic devaluation, invisibility in participation spaces, sexist language, and exclusion from opportunities. Findings show that these subtle and normalized practices have a cumulative effect that undermines motivation, sense of belonging, and professional development opportunities. The analysis is rooted in Bourdieu’s concept of symbolic violence and Foucault’s view of power as a network of relations, which helps explain how these dynamics sustain structural inequalities in higher education. The article concludes that universities need to adopt inclusive policies and specific protocols to make microaggressions visible and prevent them in academic spaces.
