OBESITY AND DISLIPIDEMIA IN MINING WORKERS ACCORDING WORK POSITION AREQUIPA, PERU

Objective. To describe the prevalence of obesity and dyslipidemia in mining workers of the Province of Arequipa. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out that included the application of structured observation cards, in which data of occupational evaluations of mining workers in the province of Arequipa was collected during 2017 and 2018. Results. The average age was higher in males than in females. There was a prevalence of male workers (93.42%). The predominant occupational group were workers and technicians (47.7%). The median of the anthropometric measurements of the workers did not show normal distribution (p <0.0001) for any of the parameters. The average values were 76 Kg for the weight; 1.67 m for height and 26.89 Kg / m2 for BMI. The security personnel presented the highest rates of overweight (83.3%). The administrative staff was the one who presented the highest percentages of consolidated obesity (40%). The occupational group with the best nutritional parameters were workers and technicians (37.2%). The median for cholesterol was 191.0 mg / dl and that of triglycerides was 145.0 mg / dl for drivers and operators of heavy machinery. Conclusions The mines are currently developing physical activity incorporation programs that have decreased the prevalence of obesity, as well as dyslipidemia in Peruvian workers.
