Abstract

The National Library (1813) from its origins was a republican symbol, allowed to instruct and generate reading habits among the population. The foundation of the popular library (1856) helped in the construction of the republican order and formed enlightened and virtuous citizens. This is evidenced in the case of the Ñuble province (1848), with the creation of the popular library, which had the purpose of instructing the rural population, reducing illiteracy, accessing books and home loans. An interpretative analysis of the primary sources was carried out that helped to verify how the libraries became spaces of sociability and functioned as elements of sustenance for the conformation of a literate city.
