Abstract

There is a need for training citizens able to face challenges coming with the new millennium and, specially, a need for forming professionals capable of solving problems, designing projects, implementing, and publishing theirresults; that ́swhy, the developmentofcommunicative competencesis required. Throughout the bibliography consulted and our pedagogical experiences we realize that the limitations in the development of linguistic skills persist, especially during the writing and reading processes in the Ecuadorian context. To deepen onthis, a qualitative and quantitative investigation with an exploratory-descriptive design was carried out, with the purpose of identifying problems in the development and mastery of language skills, so, theoretical and empirical methods were used. Consequently, the present article provides, as a result, a systematized synthesis of the bibliographic study of the behavior of these variables, as well as quantitative and qualitative results from the application of questionnaires to authorities, teachers and high school and university students, corroborating that there are limitations in the domain of communicative competences, specifically in reading and writing skills.
