Abstract

After 13 years of Law 11.340/2006, better known as the Maria da Penha Law, Brazil faces an alarming
scenario of violent crimes against women. Reflecting a patriarchal and chauvinistic culture that
oppresses differences in favor of established social standards, the struggle for gender equality still
faces resistance. The media has great participation in the naturalization of this process reproducing
concepts in force. To demonstrate this, this work presents through Rondônia online newspaper
headlines how the crime of violence against women is portrayed in order to blame the victims. In the
meantime, it brings to the light of human rights what has been debated at the international level on
combating violence against women, based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the
Maria da Penha Law, guided by the thought of Bourdier, Saffioti, Frederici, etc. The reality of
Rondônia is brought by the fact that the state occupies the fourth place in the Brazilian Map of the
index study of domestic violence against women. Although laws and treaties aimed at equality and
respect for human rights establish recognition of the inherent dignity of all, such an ideal has not yet
been achieved in Brazil. Male chauvinistic practices pervade women's lives, undermining their lives
and figuring as their own justification for the violence committed against them. Studies in this regard
are important because they highlight the need to reflect that it is not just the application of punitive
measures against violence, but effective public policies of education and awareness of an entire
community for the transformation of discourses, including media.
