ASD and the difficulties in the socio-communicative competence of people who present it: a historical review

Abstract

The present work aims to carry out a historical review through the contributions of the main authors and institutions that have collaborated to the definition of autism spectrum disorder, both in general and with respect to the deficiencies in the socio-communicative competence of people who present it. Thus, through an exhaustive bibliographic review, it has been possible to observe how its description and the explanation of the difficulties in the social and communicative skills of the people who manifest it have varied over time through the different theorists and currents who have addressed it. Since the term autism was expounded for the first time in 1911 by Bleuer until reaching the DSM-V’s and the ICD-11’s definition, this disorder’s conceptual delimitation has undergone several changes, as will be seen in this document.
