PROFESSION, ARTIST. TRAYECTOS IN THE ARGENTINEAN ART FROM A PERSPECTIVE OF GENDER
Abstract
The objective of this seminar is to study the conditions of the process of becoming professional artist women.
We will talk about two different moments of the Argentinean history of arts; but the question will be the same:
what are the mecanismos of inclusion/ exclusion, which are performed during the process of professionalization
of women artists? First of all, we will see the study of a distinguished personality, unique in the Argentinean
artistic modernity: the painter Raquel Forner (1902-1988). We are interested in recognizing her effort at defining
herself as a professional artist in a society, which has been invaded by the ideology of the household.
In second place, we will present, Argentina at present. There is a process of professionalization which has as a
result the incorporation of the artists to the teaching task in all levels of compulsory school and in teachers’
specialized training. In a restricted field, the musical activity often finds itself away from circuitos comerciales. In
conclusion, we ask ourselves if we are in the presence of a kind of artistic production, which works as an activity
of free time.
