TOTAL ARTROPLASTIA BILATERAL OF KNEE SIMULTANEOUS, GENERAL HOSPITAL OF THE ECUADORIAN INSTITUTE OF SOCIAL SECURITY IBARRA, ECUADOR. 2006 -2014: DISRIPTIVE STUDY

Background: Studies affirm that the replacement of the femoral-tibial joint with the surgical procedure of simultaneous bilateral knee arthroplasty is the treatment of choice in patients with grade IV gonarthrosis, shorter surgical time, hospitalization, rehabilitation and greater effectiveness. The objective was to a) identify sociodemographic characteristics b) identify anesthesia, surgical and ambulation times c) identify morbidities: anemia, prosthesis mechanics, infection and subjective evaluation of pain. Methods: This is a descriptive study; the universe was of 41 patients diagnosed with grade VI gonarthrosis, who underwent simultaneous bilateral knee arthroplasty by the Orthopedics and Traumatology Service of the General Hospital Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social Ibarra - Ecuador, during the period 2006 to 2014. The statistical analysis was performed in the SPSS V20 system. Results: The patients with grade IV gonarthrosis were 73% women and 27% men, the average age was 61 years. A reduction of the anesthesia time was evidenced in 41.6%, of the surgical act in 24.4%, postoperative ambulation with walker in 97.5%, hospital stay was in 36.6%. Postoperative complications were: postoperative anemia 48.7%, prosthesis mechanics 2.4%, infection and pain 0%. Conclusion: It was identified that in the adult and older adult with predominance of the female sex, he had grade IV osteoarthritis, with comorbidity of hypertension and obesity. The technique of simultaneous total bilateral knee arthroplasty reduced surgical and ambulation times, concordant to the world experience. Morbidities of post-surgical anemia and prosthetic mechanics were identified.
