INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM, DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION IN THE THOUGHT OF JOHN STUART MILL
Abstract
The present work aims to present three aspects of John Stuart Mill's thinking when he reflects on
society. These three elements are the freedom of the person, democracy and education as a tool that
will provide societies to evolve in knowledge, progress and improve people's happiness. To achieve
this objective, the ideas of freedom and their derivatives are presented, such as individual freedom;
likewise, the role of the State in Millian thought is shown, from representative democracy, and finally
education as the engine that achieves the development of people within a diverse society. The final
result concludes that Stuart Mill makes a transversal contribution to the field of philosophy, because
the Stuart Mill´s point of view has consequences in the social, political, anthropological and
educational fields, with a clear goal, the happiness of people.
