THE MEDIA COVERAGE OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY ON THE COVID-19 CRISIS IN SPAIN

Abstract

The beginning of COVID-19 crisis in Spain coincided with International Women's Day. From march 8
to June 12, the media carried out the coverage of the ‘Caso 8-M’. ABC, El Mundo, El País and
eldiario.es are the generalist media chosen by the Spanish people to read political information. From
this research, a quantitative and qualitative content analysis of its digital versions between March 8
and June 12, the day the case was filed. El País articulated the information on the idea of 8-M as a
weapon to "erode the Government." El Mundo built the message under the premise that the Executive
had hidden the hazardousness of the virus in the concentration. Meanwhile, ABC focused on the 8-
M event itself. They argued that the event did not have to be held because the authorities had warned
of the seriousness of the health crisis. In the case of eldiario.es, the strategy revolved around the
