THE ROLE OF AUTONOMY IN ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS: A REVIEW FROM THE SELF DETERMINATION THEORY
Abstract
A review of the most recent studies of Self-Determination Theory is presented to explain how this macro-theory
of the human motivation is a relevant contribution to research in romantic relationships. It starts from the premise
that the romantic relationships represent a fundamental aspect in the life of the individual and should be a wide
support to emotional and social level for his members. Is outlined, in the frame of Self-Determination Theory, the
role that would have autonomy in achieving psychological well-being that any romantic relationship should give
to who constitute it.
