TEACHERS' ATTITUDES TOWARDS IMMIGRATION IN CHILEAN CLASSROOMS: A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY
Abstract
Chile is a country that currently seems attractive to the immigrant population, especially from other
Latin American countries. This phenomenon is also evident in the classrooms, where the children of
immigrants are educated and where teachers must face these pedagogical situations. This study
has as main objective to describe the attitudes that teachers have towards immigration in school
classrooms. The research has a quantitative approach, and is descriptive with a transversal design.
There was a sample of 88 teachers of preschool, school, middle and differential education in the
Coquimbo Region. As main findings, in general teachers declared positive attitudes towards
immigration in school and in other situations. However, there are some differences depending on
the age, sex and basic training of professionals. These findings are relevant to the teaching and
learning processes of immigrant students in Chilean classrooms.
