Abstract

The reading results of the Pisa Reports of recent years have contributed to the fact that we wonder
what their role is and that of parents in the development of children's reading habits. To answer this
question, a Teaching Innovation Project was carried out at the University of Valladolid to do the study,
the specific training of future teachers and the implementation of some didactic proposals. The main
objective is to know this reality, analyze and compare the collected data, and propose didactic lines
of improvement action that encourage the child to read voluntarily. In this investigation data have
been collected and analyzed on the reading habits of children in the third, fourth and sixth grades; for
theirs parents and for theirs teachers of centers located in two similar cities in population, three of
Soria (Spain) and one Beja (Portugal). The samples are composed of children in the third, fourth and
sixth grades; for theirs parents and for theirs teachers. The supports in which the child develops the
activity of reading have been taken into account. In this way, the results of reading habits will be more
favorable, and the linguistic competence of our children will also be improved and, consequently, a
more complete development of their person.
