Abstract

The aim of the work is to discuss democracy and women's human rights. The objective is to compare
the concept of contemporary democracy and the laws that guarantee human rights to women with
data on the effective participation of women in society. Qualitative and quantitative methods were
used, with comprehensive sources of research, from bibliographic documentation to international law
and reports produced by the United Nations and World Economic Forum. As partial results, it can be
affirmed that contemporary democracy ensures the possibility of public challenge with effective
participation in equal conditions and is configured as a true way of life, which aims to combine
intelligence and education for the full realization of all human capacities. This participation is
guaranteed by several human rights treaties, among which are those that, taking into account
inequalities in fact, aim to protect in a particular way some socially vulnerable groups, including
women. However, when analyzing empirical data today, it is observed that human rights declarations
specifically aimed at the protection of women, although they are important discursive milestones, are
not able to ensure, by themselves, the participation women in society.
