I AM THE MONSTER. LA PIEL FRÍA BY ALBERT SÁNCHEZ PIÑOL AND THE REFLECTED IMAGE
Abstract
The aim of the present study is to enlighten the metanarrative mechanisms of the novel La pell freda by Albert
Sanchez Piñol (2002; Spanish translation, La piel fría, 2005) and to perceive and comprehend the function of
the protagonist as a primary reflected image of a problematic alter ego. The raising awareness of the human
element, due to the clash with the monster, is the thematic axis on which the present analysis will focus, taking
into consideration the strategies of the Fantastic literature and adventure novels based on an island. The result
is that the monster is not the real enemy. The mankind, that is, oneself, is the monster.
