GENDER PERSPECTIVE: ELEMENTARY TEACHERS' BELIEFS REGARDING ITS INCORPORATION INTO THE PROGRAMS
Abstract
This qualitative study is intended to know the beliefs of primary school teachers about the
incorporation of the gender perspective in school and the need to train in this regard. 24 teachers,
residents of the city of Veracruz, Mexico, were interviewed in the period from October to December
2019. In the findings, we noticed that gender stereotypes and fear of parents' reactions predominate
among their beliefs when discussing this topic with students. Some teachers opposed talking about
gender under the belief that they confuse their students and impose a sexual orientation on them.
Some believe that textbooks should include more information, as well as guidelines for applying them
in the classroom. Likewise, some believe that they incorporate the gender perspective by treating
boys and girls equally. Finally, most consider training necessary to understand the subject in its
entirety, since they admit that, by not knowing it, they choose to avoid it.
