EDUCATION AT THE SERVICE OF GENDER EQUALITY: A POSSIBLE PATH TO LESS UNEQUAL RELATIONSHIPS

The present article aimed to discuss the role of education in the discussions of gender equity in the school context, considering that the school has in the fulfillment of its social function, the duty to provide through pedagogical practices activities aimed at the critical development of students in order to contribute to a more just society, without stereotypes. We live in a period evidenced by the social construction of masculine and feminine roles, in which the patriarchal culture created by the supreme domination of man reproduces and feeds inequality between the sexes, generating prejudices and giving continuity to unjust practices in social relations. In an attempt to reduce gender inequality in Brazilian basic education, the government has been showing concern and investing efforts, including initiatives ranging from education funding to curricular reforms, including specific themes such as gender, race and human rights. However, we still perceive that actions do not occur in an effective way, especially with regard to pedagogical practices performed in educational spaces, since the few interventions occur without planning and in a fragmented way, which demonstrates the lack of prioritization of the theme in the political pedagogical plane of the school and perhaps the little expertise of the education professionals to handle this complex subject (because it involves values and moral principles) but at the same time important because it is a reality so present today that it is inequality between the genres.
