Perception of Discrimination and Coping Strategies in Older Adults in Argentina: Psychosocial Implications

The aim of this study is to describe perceived ageism-related discrimination and coping strategies among older adults, as well as to analyze differences according to gender and educational level within the Latin American sociocultural context, characterized by a scarcity of specific instruments. A non-experimental, descriptive-comparative design was adopted. The sample consisted of 304 older Argentinian adults aged 59 to 85 years (M = 67.42; SD = 9.89) from various provinces across the country. A questionnaire designed specifically to assess perceived discrimination and coping mechanisms was administered. The instrument was conceived with brevity and applicability in both face-to-face and virtual settings. Data were analyzed using correlations, covariate analysis, and comparisons between groups. The findings provide empirical evidence on perceived discrimination in the Latin American context, which is essential for national and international comparisons and for monitoring public policies focused on active aging and emotional well-being.
